Choosing Meaning over "More" this Christmas

This Christmas feels different now that I’m a mom of two small children. The magic isn’t just in the twinkling lights, it’s in watching my toddler’s excitement over the smallest things and seeing my baby’s eyes light up at new sights and sounds. As a mom, getting to create the magical moments reminds me what truly matters. Whether your children are small like mine or grown with families of their own, the heart of the season is the same: choosing meaning over more.

Creating Lasting Traditions

Some of the most meaningful lessons are taught through the traditions we create. Baking cookies for our elderly neighbors, making a special birthday cake for Jesus, or reading the Christmas story together are great ways to show children, and remind ourselves, the true heart of Christmas.

Traditions don’t have to be grand to be memorable. Even small gestures, repeated year after year, leave a lasting impact. For women of all ages, these moments are opportunities to pass down values, faith, and joy to the next generation.

Teaching Generosity Through Example

Christmas is about giving from the heart, and children learn best by watching. My toddler may be little, but including him in acts of kindness like baking and dropping off treats for neighbors or helping pick gifts for children in need already show him the joy of giving.

For women at every stage, modeling generosity is powerful. Whether you’re teaching toddlers, teens, or adult children, your example can teach gratitude, compassion, and the lasting value of service to others.

Practicing Peace and Mindful Stewardship

The holidays can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Thoughtful planning, setting limits, and showing gratitude for what we have create a calm, joyful home.

A few practical ways to model mindful stewardship:

            •          Set a holiday spending plan for gifts, food, and activities to prevent last-minute stress.

            •          Choose meaningful, intentional gifts.

            •          Utilize a Christmas Club Savings Account. By saving year-round, you’re less likely to feel the financial strain leading up to the holidays.

Reflecting on the True Meaning of Christmas

You may be celebrating Christmas differently this year, missing loved ones, traveling to see your grown children, or maybe you feel like you simply didn’t “do” enough. It was never meant to be about having picture-perfect decorations, how much money you spent on gifts, or how many parties you attend. Christmas invites us to pause, reflect, and focus on what matters most: family, faith, and small magical moments that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Whether your children are tiny like mine or grown with families of their own, let’s celebrate intentionally this year. May your celebrations be full of laughter, love, and Christmas joy as we remember the reason for the season and choose meaning over more.
